Abstract

Erste Maßnahmen zum Schutz von Amphibien auf Straßen wurden 1983 im österreichischen Bundesland Kärnten durchgeführt. Seit 1993 ist die "Arge NATURSCHUTZ" für die Koordination dieser Aktivitäten zuständig. Zwischen 2002 und 2006 wurden sie in zwei EU-INTERREG - Projekte in Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern aus Slowenien und Italien eingebracht. Im Jahr 2013 betreute die "Arge NATURSCHUTZ" insgesamt 172 Amphibienrouten über die Straßen des Landes Kärnten. Elf von 15 lokalen Amphibienarten sind abgedeckt. Die Erdkröte (Bufo bufo) ist an allen Standorten vertreten. Etwa 120 Menschen, hauptsächlich Freiwillige, sind jedes Jahr während der Frühlingswanderungen der Amphibien im Einsatz.Jährlich werden durchschnittlich 61.300 Fröschen, Kröten und Molche an den Schutzzäunen vor dem Straßentod gerettet.

English Abstract

First measures for protecting amphibians on roads were organized in the Austrian province of Carinthia in 1983. Since 1993, the “Arge NATURSCHUTZ” is in charge of the coordination of these activities. Between 2002 and 2006, they were incorporated in two EU-INTERREG – projects in cooperation with partners from Slovenia and Italy. In 2013, the “Arge NATURSCHUTZ” supervised a total of 172 amphibian routes crossing roads in the province of Carinthia. Eleven out of 15 local amphibian species are covered. The Common Toad (Bufo bufo) is present at all sites. About 120 people, mainly volunteers, man drift fences during the spring migrations of amphibians and so save an average number of 61,300 frogs, toads, and newts per annum from being squashed on the roads.
