English Abstract

This experiment is part of a wider study of the
species biology and conservation. Captive-bred
chicks have been either released in nest-boxes or
mixed with wild broods. 76 juveniles and one
adult have been released between 1993 and
2001, mostly in the “Alsace Bossue”. Out of 35
radio transmitter-equipped birds from 1995 to
2001: 22 were found dead, 12 disappeared from
their release site never to be located again and
one was monitored for 5 months (life time of the
transmitter). The number of juveniles released was
too small to have an impact on the local wild populations
especially considering the high death rate
of radio-tracked individuals. Captive breeding
data are also compared with those known from
the wild.
