Abstract

English Abstract

We investigated the breeding habitats of frogs in paddy field (temporary waters) and fallow field biotopes (permanent water area) in Shounji of Toyooka City, Hyogo Prefecture. Frog calls were recorded at night from April to September in 2016. The calls of seven frog species (Hyla japonica, Glandira rugosa, Pelophylax nigromaculatus, Rhacophorus schlegelii, Rhacophorus arboreus, Fejervarya kawamurai and Lithobates catesbeianus) were recorded at the study sites. While H. japonica and F. kawamurai called mainly from paddy fields, most calls of G. rugosa were from various other biotopes, and R. arboreus called only from paddy fields. P. nigromaculatus and R. schlegelii called from both biotopes, with their calls having different peak periods in each area. A lysis from all sites indicated that only a few calls of L. catesbeianus were recorded. Our results suggest that the construction of suitable biotopes near paddy fields will contribute to the preservation of spawning sites for many tive frog species in Shounji.
