Abstract

English Abstract

The effect of artifiial topography on the success of Picea jezoensis seedlings was examined in the Tokyo University Forest, near Furano, Hokkaido, Japan. In August 1979, scarification was carried out to produce three artificial topography types : convex, flat, and concave. The emergence and establishment of P. jezoensis seedlings on each topography type was then monitored for 22 years. In the autumn following scarification, the number of P. jezoensis seedlings established differed significantly among topography types, with fewer in flat plots than in the other types. Over the 22 years monitored, the P. jezoensis seedlings established in concave plots were severely damaged, and most died. More broadleaved litter accumulated in the concave plots than in the other types ; this litter contained snow blight disease fungi, which may have caused the remarkable disappearance of seedlings from the concave plots. The scarification that produced the three topography types aided in the regeneration of P. jezoensis, and twenty-two years after the scarification, sufficient P. jezoensis seedlings have regenerated in the study area. Currently, the P. jezoensis population is not as tall as the Betula ermanii population. The density of B. ermanii should be ma ged properly in the future.
