Abstract

Seit über 20 Jahren wird die Obere Drau in Kärnten (Österreich) erfolgreich revitalisiert. Im Zuge eines mittelfristig angelegten Umsetzungsprozesses wurden schwerpunktmäßig Nebenarme und Augewässer neu angelegt sowie Uferverbauungen entfernt. Auf diese Weise wurde rund ein Viertel der Fließstrecke der Oberen Drau renaturiert und der Fluss samt Uferzone als Europaschutzgebiet ausgewiesen. In diesem Rückblick auf 20 Jahre Drau-Revitalisierungen werden die wichtigsten Maßnahmen, Auswirkungen auf Fauna und Flora sowie flussbauliche Erfahrungswerte beispielhaft vorgestellt.

English Abstract

The Obere Drau has been successfully revitalized in Carinthia (Austria) for over 20 years. In the course of a medium-term implementation process, ancillary branches and floodplain water bodies were newly created, and control structures were removed. In this way around a quarter of the river Obere Drau was renaturalized and the river and the bank zone were designated as a European nature protection area. In this review of 20 years of Drau revitalization, the most important measures, impacts on fauna and flora as well as experiences in riparian construction and engineering are presented.
