English Abstract

The impact of the human activities on the distribution
of waterbirds is a well-studied subject. A
research program studying the ecological value of
wetlands is disused quarries was started in 1 996
by UNPG (Union National des Producteurs de
Granulats). As with other similar research the
high biodiversity of disused quarrying sites was
highlighted. We discuss the opportunities provided
by many quarries for ecological restoration
which would make for sustainable development.
We try to indicate the limits of such exercises by
highlighting the constraints faced by the industry.
