English Abstract

A comparative study of sandy mudflats in the
process of being colonised by Common Cord
grass Spartina anglica and areas mechanically
cleared was undertaken. The latter held higher
densities of invertebrates, which explain the
higher numbers of bird per hectare recorded for
most species of wader on the cleared areas.
Common Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula and
Dunl in Calidris alpina were the only two species to
be affected significantly by an increase in cord
grass up to a maximum cover of 31%.
