Abstract

English Abstract

The characteristics of forest stands regenerated by scarification were evaluated in terms of 1) species composition and species diversity, 2) height growth and environmental factors influencing the height growth, and 3) compactness, using data from a large number of plots on Hokkaido, northern Japan. In most of the plots, Betula ermanii was domi nt, and species diversity was low. B. ermanii was taller in stands that were regenerated by scarification than in stands that were regenerated in other ways. Site index was larger in regions with humid climates and on lower slopes. Most stands were overcrowded. Based on these results, several ecological problems that need to be solved to increase the versatility of scarification are presented.
